I was blocked by the similar issue. The stream created by through2 is strictly restricted to something like REPL. Until the next() called, the following chunk will not be read and processed.

I wrote oct to resolve this issue. However, only object mode is supported now:

var myTransform = new Octopus(function(chunk, callback) {
    // Simulate an asynchronous process which takes no more than 1 second (1000 millseconds). 
    setTimeout(function() {
        callback(null, chunk * 3);
    }, Math.ceil(Math.random() * 1000));
});
someReadableStream.pipe(myTransform).pipe(someWritableStream);
