The generated docs are indeed important and they have always been and will continue to be included in all releases. I don't think it's useful, however, to include them in the git development tree as they risk to be quickly out of date and need constant updating.

I'm not saying they ought to be in the dev tree, but perhaps the Readme should be updated. Perhaps the latest released version of the docs could be hosted on the web somewhere.

You can find the latest release version of the doxygen-generated docs here: http://iipimage.sourceforge.net/docs/iipsrv/
They are linked to from the website, but perhaps it's not so easy to find. The dev README should be more or less up to date. Tell me if there's anything missing from it and I'll update it.
