It might have to do with your http server's mimetype. Mimetype has to be image/svg+xml. I think it does not have anything to do with file's content.

This is a local load.. no server involved. It works with the Tux.svg but not any of the font awesome svg files.
I did notice svg files grabbed from here work: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Font-Awesome_icons
Not sure where the breakdown is but there seems to be something not quite right with the way svg files are generated in this project.

Great to hear. I was going to say that adding the following to the svg tag got it to display.
xmlns:svg="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"
Not sure if that's the same conclusion you came to but thought I'd mention it.
