I talked briefly with Ryan about this - it's not obvious, but I think I can build in a connect timeout using the existing net API.

I'm going to put some TCP timeout work into node 0.5 to handle this, rather than in restify. I'll leave this open though so I remember to make a "friendly" config setting for it.
