That makes perfect sense. I'm putting this in the 1.1 bucket, as I think this could fall out of some other refactoring I want to do to make the optimizer a bit nicer to use, for instance where we talked in IRC about having non-default contexts working fine without that special __requireJsBuild flag on a callback passed to require.
Right now I do not have a schedule for 1.1, it will definitely not be this month, but maybe in a couple of months after that. If this is makes it really awkward, or if other people need this (leave a note in the bug) then I can see about moving it up, but maybe doing it in a more hacky way. I would prefer to do it cleaner in a 1.1 though.

I just put something in the dev2.0 branch for this: if you pass "out": function (text) {}, then a single file build will not go to the file system, but instead be given to that function when done. You can try it with this snapshot:
