Signup at MongoLab and create a free DB:

Back in the overview, create a new database:

Navigate to the users tab:

And "Add database user". Now assign a username and password.

Now you can use the URI which you can find in the summary page to connect from your Heroku instance:

Now in your Heroku repo update the MONGOLAB_URI:

heroku config:set MONGOLAB_URI="mongodb://<username>:<password>@ds053688.mongolab.com:53688/<databasename>"
