Hi @chanced, thanks for giving Redpanda a try. Also, thank you for sharing your experience so far. It looks like you might have had an issue with Redpanda auto-creating the topic for you. Can you try creating the topic with a command like the following: rpk api topic creat <name> and then make use of it? When running on macOS only a subset of commands will work as expected, like rpk api or rpk container. rpk status isn't supported on macOS as of yet, and I'll file an issue to address this. Thanks!

hey @rkruze I should have mentioned I was able to create a topic through the CLI. I wasn't able to get sarama to do it programmatically though. I haven't taken the time to try and diagnose why that is.

By the way, thanks for going with the licensing model you did. The industry, as a whole, is becoming harder and harder for a small non-funded venture to get off the ground. I don't fault Confluent for this but the resources to run Kafka/ZooKeeper are kind of nuts. Their cluster, so far as I can tell, will be $1k/mo after their incredibly generous 3 mo trial.

From what I understand, a N1 node (or less) on GCP would suffice with redpanda while I'm getting started up, which is far more achievable than the alternative.

My point is, thanks for helping startups by lowering the barrier to entry.
