Is that before or after version 1.13.2? I can't reproduce this problem in the latest version either with or without a compositing window manager. Are your labels "Opaque" on the left and "Transparent" on the right?

I've found this bug too now, the only reason I can think of that I couldn't see it before is that I must have forgotten to restart roxterm after switching to compiz. Please try the latest svn.
In my defence, vte has two calls, one for setting "saturation" and one for "opacity", and one is the inverse of the other, but surely opacity and saturation should be synonyms, not antonyms!
