The javadoc states flatMapCompletable consumes the upstream in an unbounded manner, which means all those Completables may be realized together. There is an overload where you can specify the maximum concurrency of the operator.

In the non-threaded case, you see only one completable because you have in-sequence blocking of processing, thus the next subscription can't happen until the current completable finishes.

In the threaded case, the subscription can resume as the waiting goes onto another thread and won't block the progression of flatMapCompletable to start more Completables.
