Are you sure that this has to do with large bitmaps? This looks more like WinRT doesn't decode bitmaps at all...

Oh oops. If you try with a smaller bmp file e.g. this one (922x495) it works.

Been doing some more experimenting to find a workaround.
Looks like this isn't just a bmp issue, and I've crossed out image dimensions and use of colour as possible single causes. Loading doesn't even work on a purely white 16x16 png.
I'll close this issue though as it's not a problem with Splat.
