Not really, the problem is currently the test explorer needs and angular.json/angular-cli.json file to track the position of the karma.config.js and the folder of the source.

Without the cli basically anyone can come up with the structure that they want and it would be imposible to find those files.

I could include 2 config properties so you can setup those yourself. Would that be enough? Could you create a feature request for that?.

No worries, thank you for letting me know this. I will close the issue and start working on a solution. I am already adding configuration values for another feature request so I will probably do both at the same time and fit them in the next release.
