i think that's because you have CC and CXX set
from pytorch.
i've seen this before. cmake does this weird thing, even though the GCC is right there.
is your gcc-4.9 in your $PATH?

my default gcc, though, is clang, but it looks like it's grabbing 4.9 anyway

I had the same issue on Linux, CXX
was set (with another version than the one configured through update-alternatives
). Just unset CXX
.
