IIRC file.read() returns a bytes object which is not writable, you could try bytesarray instead. Depending on what you want to achieve, torch.from_file is probably the better option.

from pytorch.

Please use https://discuss.pytorch.org/ to ask generic questions, and issue to report problems with PyTorch.

Behavior you've described is an expected ones, as strings in Python (and bytes is kind of string) are immutable, which one can observe for themselves, by trying to alter contents of it, for example by running something like the that:

% python3 -c "b=b'Ha ha ha';print(type(b)); b[1]='e'"
<class 'bytes'>
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<string>", line 1, in <module>
TypeError: 'bytes' object does not support item assignment

from pytorch.
