IIRC file.read()
returns a bytes
object which is not writable, you could try bytesarray
instead. Depending on what you want to achieve, torch.from_file
is probably the better option.

Behavior you've described is an expected ones, as strings in Python (and bytes
is kind of string) are immutable, which one can observe for themselves, by trying to alter contents of it, for example by running something like the that:
% python3 -c "b=b'Ha ha ha';print(type(b)); b[1]='e'"
<class 'bytes'>
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<string>", line 1, in <module>
TypeError: 'bytes' object does not support item assignment
