@pfmoore , given issues like this, I'm inclined to remove this complicated version read function, and just use the import approach that most projects get away with, and let the PPUG cover the read scenario for the special cases.

@qwcode I agree - I don't actually like how complicated the boilerplate is. It doesn't give a good impression for people starting a project for the first time.

closing since I've replaced the version function with the simpler import technique which has a comment that defers to the PPUG for further discussions. I also updated the "version" portion of the PPUG tutorial to mention all 3 techniques: 1) import, 2) read and parse, and 3) read and exec
