Is there a way or an additional applet to install that could replace this abomination called "distance applet" which is a default for Plasma?

none that I know of....

In a plasma panel the Window AppMenu could help like this:
Using the maximum available space always!! So you would not need at all "distance applet" but I dont know yet what functionality concerning "scrolling" that would break

Replacing AppMenu applet with the system one helps. It doesn't get showed behind distance applet from obvious reasons, it squeezes it strongly and even in elastic mode some sites push systray a little bit outside desktop edge - just a little (part of the clock is over the edge), so that's more manageable. Besides, this effect happens rarely.

Basically, your other applets (title and buttons) cooperate well with system global menus so for now, it will do.

It looks like the improvement of hiding menu behind tray is causing conflict on the system panel. Let's give it a bit time because there is no rush, system global menus work well with your other applets and the panel hiding behind tray is a cool feature and it would be a shame to get rid of it.

So at the moment let's advise to use system global menus with system panel and appmenu applet with latte and we'll see how it goes.

Or...let's create a spacer applet that behaves in rational and possible to set up way ;p (it stays where you put it, it has a possible to define width and some other options)

Replicating plasma appmenu behavior it isnt something special... Maybe an option is setings:

"Use minimum width when it is possible" that the user can enable/disable may be the answer for this...

Sorry to took so long to test it, but I was too busy at work.

After I marked "Always use maximum available width" and deleted distance applet, menu works fine now on the system panel, just like on latte :). Thanks!
