After giving this much though I think we are correct to have version branches.
If the goal one day is to have federation we are going to need to maintain a number of version and this may be the best way to perform this work.
I am going to close this for now but we may be able to re-visit it in future.
So I propose a slightly newer method with we sort of did with rework/mongodb.
master
holds what will become the next version, in our current case 0.6.
All version will be given their own branch when the version is ready to go ie 0.3
, 0.4
, 0.5
, etc...
All work which are not hotfixes or simply bug fixes will be done in their own branch and then merged in to master when ready. At some point we branch from master created a version.

point of view we will then switch our deployment to the new branch, run any scripts (migration, indexing, etc...) and move over with these versions.
