I would rather opt out of adding functionality that cannot be cross-driver compatible. worst case one can always resort to lower level api when needed, but having to rewrite library dependent code when switching drivers seems like a big tradeoff

But currently there is no hook to add that functionality. If I could access the imagick object in my filter, I could just do the lowlevel in the filter ...

well Imagick instance is internal to Imagine and it is discouraged to use it, unless you know what you're doing in which case, you can grab it with reflection or even instantiate it and wrap with Imagine\Imagick\Image yourself
