@sopgreg thanks, but I am using this slightly different.

The parent POM project uses the properties maven.compiler.source and maven.compiler.target instead:

In combination with other plugins the usage of these properties has been proven more efficient, as it is not limited to the compiler plugin. See https://maven.apache.org/plugins/maven-compiler-plugin/examples/set-compiler-source-and-target.html

Ok. Interstingly, this wasn't picked up by my IntelliJ IDEA, everything was set to language level 8. The issue was that the bundled Maven 3 was set. After setting a local, more recent maven installation explicitly, the language level was correctly set.
