You could forego using the Middleware and just handle the pdf format manually. This would give you the control to set extra ivars. Here's an example:

You could also include a print style sheet and show or hide things you don't want shown on the html/pdf version.

@maxguzenski - I used to use princely to do that with prince. I've made a plugin for Rails that uses PDFKit instead of prince that's basically a drop in replacement.
