Using exec(open(script.py).read()) to run the script looks a little odd to me. But I haven't worked with pyzo IDE to know if this is required or not.

The behavior you describe is kinda expected. When the sketch is done with the draw loop, it simply calls the exit() function which brings us out of the interpreter. I don't think removing this exiting behavior will affect any other thing. If someone removes it, I'll be happy to merge those changes.
