Usually when you cannot start simple_switch, it means another simple_switch process is already running with the same device id or using the same thrift port. You can try killing all existing simple_switch processes; I would also recommend running sudo mn -c for good measure.

As an added bonus, mn -c also kills any NOX controllers that you happen to have been running... say since 2009 :-)

I know mn -c and tried on the beginning. Didn't help. There is also no running simple_switch processes. Can it be a problem with Thrift itself?
