Interesting.
Does the problem go away if you evaluate the ns form at the top of the buffer?

I believe it did. I have been having a number of issues with emacs-live on Ubuntu 12.04 running under VirtualBox on a Windows 7 laptop.
This was using Java 1.7 OpenJDK
I have now switched to Java 1.6 OpenJDK as things seem more stable and AC now works with nrepl-jack-in
Leiningen 2.0.0-preview10 on Java 1.6.0_24 OpenJDK Client VM

This has started happening again which is a little confusing.
Mac OS X 10.8.2
homebrew emacs 24.2.1
Leiningen 2.0.0-preview10 on Java 1.6.0_37 Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM
connection to lein repl works fine with working AC
m-x nrepl-jack-in AC does not work. Shows "Namespace not found." message in status bar
AC works after evaluating the ns form
This behaviour is also happening on my Ubuntu 12.04 environment.

This is expected behaviour. AC can't autocomplete a symbol in a namespace that doesn't yet exist....
