My 2c:

  • Scheduling should depend on the person's usual responsibilities. Backup task person(s) should be in the office during this time.
  • Optional, but encouraged.
  • Buy-in from the team is a must. There may very well be preparations or follow-up tasks that will impact company-wide priorities on either side of the "personal pet project" month.

Re: "There may very well be preparations or follow-up tasks that will impact company-wide priorities on either side of the "personal pet project" month."

My thinking is that these projects need to be standalone and not require any shift in company priorities, "prep time", or require anyone else's time. If we decide the outcome is something worth pursuing once it is complete, then that is a new discussion to have about how/when it would fit into company planning.

Ok, if it's truly a standalone project, then I think only CEO approval should be required, but presenting to the team would be a good idea as well (just not for purposes of approval).

@blakehall @eojthebrave @ashleyrian Any thoughts/questions to add before I take a first pass at a draft?

I don't think it should be required. Other than that I don't really have any additional thoughts.

I agree that it should be encouraged vs. required and that it's a good idea to share with the team, not necessarily for approval but for transparency and any feedback or helpful suggestions that anyone may have.

I think stating intent rather than scheduling is a good idea. Proposals to the team, ideally with a majority vote approval (and Addi breaking any ties). In terms of planning ahead, I think a minimum of one month is reasonable. Ideally it would be great to be able to include these in quarterly planning though.

I don't particularly like the idea of it being required (in large part because I'm not sure what I would propose/work on right now). But I do like the idea of finding a way to encourage these projects. They seem like a great way to dig in to something slightly on the fringes of our business, and I could see how that would be really fun.
