On "other systems" there is such a code to automatically switch from "host" to "socket" driver parameters:

    if (strpos($this->_config['host'], '/') !== false) {
        $this->_config['unix_socket'] = $this->_config['host'];
        unset($this->_config['host']);
    } else if (strpos($this->_config['host'], ':') !== false) {
        list($this->_config['host'], $this->_config['port']) = explode(':', $this->_config['host']);
    }

Hi, @PHOENIX-MEDIA !

It is possible, you need to configure unix_socket parameter and disable host under doctrine.dbal.connections.default config namespace in app/config/parameters.yml
so, it will looks like

# Doctrine Configuration
doctrine:
    dbal:
        default_connection:   default
        connections:
            default:
                driver:       pdo_mysql
                host:         ~
                unix_socket:  "/tmp/mysql.sock"
                port:         "%database_port%"
                dbname:       "%database_name%"
                user:         "%database_user%"
                password:     "%database_password%"
                charset:      UTF8
