Sounds like you don't have the directX sdk instaled, but SDL should compile without it. Are you compiling on windows? What version? which version of VS are you using?

edit: Looking at the source code again, audio.h requires dsound.h.

Instaling the directX SDK has removed the dsound.h error. Could we have the directX sdk listed as a prerequisite?

We probably should. It's very strange though, I never installed it on my
laptop, yet it compiles there without any issues
