I have never seen those symbols before. What I had in mind is something resembling "first aid" so I suggest we go for

plaster

or

lifebelt

to get rid of religious non-sense completely.

My vote would be for the lifebelt. IFRC's position is that their symbols
should not be used as a generic 'support' / 'help' / 'first-aid' symbol
anyway.

👍. We'll need to make a less glossy version that fits with the website design, though.

Yes lifebelt is better and I think used in many programs as help icon. And I had never seen the Red Crystal logo either, just wanted to avoid any religious issues.

How about the help icon from the Tango Project?
help-browser
There is also an .svg version if this is too small. It's under the apps directory of tango.

That is because it is part of a Tango derived icon theme: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gnome-help-browser.svg
