Aah.. I noticed that the url https://github.com/openethereum/openethereum/releases/download/v3.1.0/openethereum-linux-v3.1.0.zi isn't the download URL, it redirects to another URL. That URL is visible in the redirect message but curl to that url gives some xml.
In browser if I click on the link then it gets downloaded on my mac. But I want to do this on a EC2 instance (where I have to use curl). Any suggestions?

wget https://github.com/openethereum/openethereum/releases/download/v3.1.0/openethereum-linux-v3.1.0.zip should solve your question
