I turned it off because the original PR that included it should never have been accepted, imo.

The major thing is we need to decide whether we want to be incorporating internally libraries that are widely available in the repos. If that is the case, we can spend time getting it working for make distcheck ...

So, I thought we decided that already. This is a job that we do piece by piece. At the moment there are plenty of other things in there that is "widely available", not just gtest/gmock. Anyway, let's see what we can do to fix #150.

It's very easy to change the stuff under tests/ to build without anything inside our repo. I can do that if that is required right now. Tell me.

First, tell me what does make distcheck to not work? I see it ends with stdafx.h for gtest, but what is the real problem?
