JSON does not define a format for expressing Time Objects. Note that what you saw was due to using the Time class, not the Date class. Yajl elected to express time as a String. Oj uses a Number instead. Numbers are more efficient for serialization and deserializing. In any case sidekiq assumes that Time is expressed as a String. That assumption is based on using specific JSON serializing gems.
The solution:
Oj does allow for Time to be expressed as a String. Set the time_format option to be :unix or :ruby either in the default options or when calling dump(). I will see if I can submit an enhancement to sidekiq to allow support for Time expressed as a Number.
