Useful could be to follow OSMAnd way to graphically display tags tracktype=, surface=, smoothness=, eventually also mtb:scale= . It may be matter rather of OSM map providers, but overlay layers could help, similarly as trekking / hiking routes layers.

Certainly a feature I personally would also like to have.

This can be distinguished and implemented as 2 independent things:
Marking based on OSM tagging and related info
(inspired by OSMAnd http://osmand.net/help/Map-Legend_default.html )
system of solid/dash/dot marking for track grades,
track background colour for surface= ,
marking road conditions or MTB/SAC scale
several sharp arrows for big incline
etc
Marking based on profile cost, represented by colour/pattern of route
Something similar to colouring of routes, according to above sea level, present on some GPX processing websites. Or, using the same colour, like current Magenta, but with similar solid/dashed/dotted pattern system like for track grades.
E.g.
cost 1.0-1.2 = Magenta ( or Magenta solid ) ( avoiding Blue )
cost 1.2-1.5 = Green ( or Magenta long dashed )
cost 1.5-2.0 = Yellow ( or Magenta short dashed )
cost 2.0-3.0 = Orange ( or Magenta dashed/dotted )
cost >3.0 = Red ( or Magenta dotted )

I found very useful the OsmAnd layout for MTB. When I'm on mountain on a path i could take decision very quickly.
To plan a route I would like the same clear information (path colored green, blue, red, grey)
