Can you be more specific? There are a already tests for just this case in the test-suite.
Specifically, see line 441 of tests/xapian_backend.py for a simple wildcard search using the 'startswith' filter.
How are you building your search query?

According to the Xapian doc (http://xapian.org/docs/queryparser.html heading Wildcard) the Xapian QueryParser supports a trailing '*' automatically if the flag is set.
So with haystack I have to use a filter?

True. Xapian.queryparser does support this, but if you're using the built-in Haystack form, it takes your input and passes it to the backend after running it through Queryset.auto_query`. This has the side-effect of stripping out most of the special characters, including '*'.
There is an open issue for this on Haystack's issue tracker. Look for an improved auto_query coming soon that should fit your need better.
