No wheel packages are uploaded for M1 and building from source currently requires an extra step. See the docs for details.

When last I checked, there weren't any options to use M1-based runners with Azure Pipelines. That's why no M1 compatible wheels have made. Maybe it's changed and it's possible to emulate it (just like in the case of the Linux aarch64 wheels). I have to look into it.

Hi @noirello , it looks like one might be able to build wheels for M1 macs via cibuildwheel, as per https://cibuildwheel.readthedocs.io/en/stable/faq/#apple-silicon, - with some limitations applying though ...

The limitations seem to be

  • Not being able to test the generated wheel for M1 macs
  • It only works for cpython >= 3.8
  • Requires users to have a recent version of Pip
