SMTP indeed supports one connection for multiple sendings but Nodemailer currently behaves more like PHPs mail command - for every send a new connection is opened/closed. This is far for optimum but it was the easiest to implement.

I've fiddled around with a new SMTP module for Nodemailer that hasn't got such limitations but I'm far from anything solid and currently I don't have much time for it anyway so I can't promise anything. I guess it would be possible to tweak the current engine instead of creating a new one - the guys of NodeJitsu have done this with their node_mailer module (which uses Nodemailer as a back end but supports connection pooling etc.).

from nodemailer.

Ah! Thanks for the tip on node_mailer. To confirm, that lives here?
