I don't understand this.
Presently, we have
CFLAGS= -Wall -g
so that includes both debugging information as well as all warnings.
Perhaps you mean a separate option
make debug
as described e.g. here?

-g does not add any overhead (after using 'strip' on the binary), so debug or no debug build hadly makes a difference. This is not the case for -pg for example

It is only used for development purposes.
