That's a great question.
This looks like a limitation of HelpDocs widget, as Intercom (in comparison) allows for keyboard navigation to their chat widget, employing tabIndex
, role
, and aria
HTML properties as well.
We'll reach out to HelpDocs to see if they have a proposed solution (perhaps can customize the widget's generated HTML).
In the mean time, your suggestion of linking out to the site might be best, possibly visible to screen readers only, as desired. Great resource for that: https://accessibility.18f.gov/hidden-content/
