Indeed, it was an abbreviation: "июля" means "of July", and "нояб." is an abbreviation of "of November". I'll run your test when I adapt it (FreeBSD's date
has no -d
option).

If it matters, it is Windows Terminal and ssh to FreeBSD.

And I see the same problem in xterm over VNC.

Hmm... I think is a library problem.
I think the short month strings aren't all the same length.
The giveaway is the .
(dot) in November.
I've seen the same before with a French locale.
Can you try this:
export LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8
for i in {01..12}; do date -d 2022-$i-01 "+%b %d"; done
I get:
янв 01
фев 01
мар 01
апр 01
мая 01
июн 01
июл 01
авг 01
сен 01
окт 01
ноя 01
дек 01
However with French, it's a mess:
export LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8
for i in {01..12}; do date -d 2022-$i-01 "+%b %d"; done
janv. 01
févr. 01
mars 01

mai 01
juin 01
juil. 01
août 01
sept. 01
oct. 01
nov. 01
déc. 01

In NeoMutt, you might be able to change the formatting of the date string.
This works but right-aligns:
%{%4b %d}
This ignores the left-align:
%{%-4b %d}
This looks awful, but seems to work:
%-5{%b} %{%d}
from neomutt.
❯ for i in {01..12}; do date -j -f "%m %d" "$i 1" "+%b %d"; done

%-5{%b} %{%d}
in index_format
worked, thank you very much!
