@dmontag: The typical way of solving this is to use a dedicated machine in an HA cluster as a read-only instance for e.g. ops introspection, reporting, or other read-only tasks.

Unfortunately, there isn't a clear division between the read and write ops in the inner parts of the Core Java API (specifically around indexes, which perform write operations at odd times).

We're looking over the surface APIs in Q2, and will take this into consideration, in the meantime, I'd recommend implementing your own GraphDatabaseService that delegates read ops and throws errors on write ops.
