Sounds about right. However, I'm not sure why you need to modify the default node red's mqtt node.
It's more important to work on the dnr node rather than the editor. The mqttServer on the editor side doesn't do anything, the coordination between the editor and the participating node red (device monitor, flow deployment) is done via websocket.
It's the dnr node who facilitate cross device communication.
