https://docs.aws.amazon.com/amazondynamodb/latest/developerguide/Query.html

So apparently, key condition expression and filter expression support different types of filters.
Key condition expression is basically a worse version of filter expression which only supports (=, <, <=, >, >=, BETWEEN).

The way "querying" works in dynamo:

  1. Match the hash_key
  2. Use the key condition expression (RCU consumed is calculated by this size)
  3. Use the filter expression to further refine result
  4. Result returned

You cannot use != in range key by design.
