Standard practice is that if the syllable continues over many notes it should be "My - - - ste - ry", achieved just by pressing hyphen repeatedly.

And normally punctuation should go before a _ ("Try,___")

According to this picture, melisma can be used where you suggest - - - to be a standard practice:

For the punctuation, I know that your suggestion does work, but I consider it to be at the wrong place. Why not allow the punctuation to be at the place it should be?

That example is not well made in several aspects: The text reads “Allelula” instead of “Alleluia”, slurs for “lu” in Soprano and Alto are missing, and the slur for “Al” in the alto voice should start at the beginning of the c. The wrong melismatic notation with ___ is just another mistake. Elaine Gould says this notation leads to irritation:

If I understand your point correctly, the good practice is to use "- - -" for melisma inside a word and ___ for melisma on the last syllable of the word.

For the punctuation after the ___, the need still holds as it is the end of the word and I can not see any reason to put the punctuation on the first note of the sequence.

The reason is that it's done that way in 99.9% of scores.

You could say the same about consonants at the end of the syllable, i. e.

Thi_____s is a weird e - xa - - - mple, i - - - sn’t i_____t?

Thank you for your feedbacks.
I am discovering these lyrics habits. Some looks non-natural, I do not know if it is by choice or due to software limitations.

In general, music notation is rather logical an coherent. Early punctuation with melisma looks less coherent to me, but it looks it is the way it is usually done. I will be forced to do the same due to current limitations, but this is not a severe problem.

Another limitation I’ve seen is that in say an operatic aria, I’ll see a very long melisma on a syllable. So long that it crosses over a rest. In the middle of the word, this rest crossing is no issue, but I’ve seen the same rest crossing with end of word melismas where I have to use expression text as a fake continuation of the melisma line.
