Or you can precheck the value before doing an implicit conversion (this happens when you try to do mathematics on it) or explicit conversion (for example using int())
First check it
def isint(s):
try:
int(s)
return True
except ValueError:
return False
Or just try to get an int and fallback to an default value if the int conversion fails.
def get_int(x, def):
try:
return int(s)
except ValueError:
return def
