Actually, the Eclipse platform will include a minimalist version in Luna,
so it will be better to riff off of that.

The whole sub-series of C-x 2 commands does not function 3.4+. This is a
result of the entire Eclipse interface being reworked and constitutes a
known issue.

The publicly available HandySplit plugin, code available on GitHub at
https://github.com/akikhtenko/HandySplit seems to mostly perform the
operations. It might be worth looking in to it for a rewrite.

Good thinking. Just wanted to start the bug list now that everything's here on GitHub, so I put in one of the major known issues. Glad there's a solid plan for it getting fixed in the future.

I decided to try Luna M7 and installed Emacs+. The builtin "Window > Editor > Toggle Split Editor" feature seems pretty useless for someone used to the Emacs C-x 1/2/3/0/o commands. Emacs+ always did a good job emulating that behavior. My reliance on this functionality is one of the reasons I was never able to use IntelliJ for more than a few days.

I tried HandySplit and it seems to work well with the exception that the keyboard shortcuts are all wrong ;-) Until splitting can be addressed in Emacs+, the combination of these plugins and remapping shortcuts may be enough. I couldn't figure out a good mapping for C-x 1 and I bound C-x 0 to "Flatten Split Editors" which isn't quite right.

I have checked in an initial version of split/join functionality into the dev branch that should work from Kepler forward (it was developed under the Luna M6 Release (4.4.0M6)).
I'm looking for people willing to test this under various OS's (I only have access to OSX).
There is one Eclipse bug that affects OSX and prevents the cursor enablement, but on other platforms it should work without issue.
