I’m in favour of opinionated libraries so I’m fundamentally OK with just setting the option. However, you’re right that (badly programmed!) packages will break.

I’ve asked on Twitter. Maybe we can collect some evidence from experience.

Answering your specific question, there’s the defaults package, which allows globally replacing the default argument values for specific functions.

However, this once again sets defaults globally, not restricted to module scope (of course). Yet this might somehow be harnessed. Let’s brainstorm this.

Reading from a text file still needs this, I would suggest setting stringsAsFactors=F on each function call in io.

fixed in #33 - all io functions explicitly set stringsAsFactors=FALSE
