Backgrounds are definitely working, it could possibly be a permissions problem for you. What OS are you on?

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Hey gugahoi,

I've opened this issue because we experience this on 2 different machines. Both of us can't get the custom backgrounds to work. Both of us have a Windows 7 X64 installation.

This is what I get when i set "Use a random background when not watching media" to yes: http://piclair.com/data/g7vyf.jpg

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

It seems you may have an old version running since the media library should have some button controls on the bottom right. My advice would be delete this one and clone again. Starting from scratch will reduce the possibility of errors, if it still doesn't work then let me know and I'll see if I can find a solution for you.

Oh and remember to clear your cache as well.

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Okay, gonna do that right now.

Is there a possibility that i can keep my widgets/settings etc or do I have to start all over again?

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Okay nvm.

I have done a clean git clone and deleted every file from my old Maraschino folder. I've also cleaned up my browser cache.

The only thing is.. the problem still exists :(
Also the diskspace feature is not able to find my drives. Could that be because of my raid 0 setup?

Appreciate your hard work ;) Keep it up guys!

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Damn, the latest update totally broke this thing. I can't connect to my XBMC anymore.

I think that mac adress thing is causing the issue. In what format do you want me to enter the mac adress?

Should it be: 0a0a0a0a0a
Or: 0a:0a:0a:0a:0a:0a
Or: 0A0A0A0A0A0A

Sadly, none of these formats seem to work for me

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

Disk Space Module is not compatible with Windows at the moment, however I already have a fix that should be applied some time soon.

If the background problem still exists, the only thing I can think of is permissions, except I am not sure how to configure them on a windows machine. How are you running Maraschino: through apache or directly through python?

Regarding XBMC I would leave the MAC address empty for now, fill everything else.

Just a couple of days ago I made a fresh install of XP on my computer and installed Maraschino and had absolutely 0 problems that is why I said backgrounds work but it might have something to do with your configuration that was not on mine. If you can, post a screenshot of things and as much info as possible.

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Ah ok, I thought you already implemented the new diskpace feature :P my fault.

As for the background feature. I've tried 2 different setups:
Installing maraschino in C:\xampp\htdocs\Maraschino, to use the xampp apache server

I've also tried to install in C:\maraschino and therefore using the cherrypy server.

None of them worked with the backgrounds. The only option i can think of now is to rename a background to 'grass.jpg' so that Maraschino thinks it's the default bg.

As with the permissions, I am using the administrator account of my computer, so permissions shouldn't be a problem?

Since the latest update I cannot connect to my (local) xbmc player. This is how my settings are: http://piclair.com/data/hmdvb.jpg

Note that filling in 'localhost' as server adress also doesn't work.

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

Remove http:// from xbmc hostname that should do it. For backgrounds I'll try to think of something.

Ah nice, removing the http:// did the trick :)

Please let me know if you find something about the backgrounds not showing up :)

Thank you!

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

Just to clarify: the bg works fine except when you add your own file?

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Yes. The standard bg works, and when i add my custom bg and name it 'grass.jpg' then it also works. But any other image does not display. Also: when i set 'Use a random background when not watching media' to 'yes' then I see no bg at all...

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Hey gugahoi,

I'd like to know if there's any progress on this issue, or would there be a fix in any future release of Maraschino?

Best regards,
Marcoevich

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

Sorry man, not yet. Sat down yesterday for the first time to code in a few days and have not been able to reproduce your problem.

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

Ok, still can't reproduce this. Can you send me the image file you are trying to use? What is the filename?

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Here's the file that's currently my background: http://www.4shared.com/photo/B7In-Koa/grass.html

Note that I named it 'grass.jpg' otherwise, it does not work.

But the problem is not a faulty image, the thing is that Maraschino doesn't know how to display a random background. It only displays any background that is called 'grass.jpg'. Anything else won't work.

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

Sorry but I really cannot reproduce this error. No idea why it's not working for you.... might be better to wait for @mrkipling input.

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Hmm okay, on what kind of machine are you testing this? A friend of mine experiences the same behavior. We both have a windows 7 ultimate X64 installation.

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

I have it setup on xubuntu and on Mac OS X. I have also used it before on a Windows XP (32 bit I believe) so I could fix the HDD module for Windows. It worked on all of them so I really don't know how to go about this.

If you wish, you could try the experimental branch and see if that changes anything for you... there are a ton of improvements there but as the name says it is experimental and it might have errors here and there and every now and then it might have broken things.

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Ok, I will try that ;)

Is there a way to upgrade Maraschino, so that I don't have to setup all my settings again? And also, would it be possible to have multiple instances of Maraschino running at the same time? Or is that a no-go?

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

Are you using git? If so just do in your maraschino directory

git checkout -b experimental remotes/origin/experimental

otherwise there is still no update function without git so it will need to be a fresh install.

Multiple instances is possible with multiple installations at the moment. Just use different ports for each one. There is a pull request that should address that already in the works but not implemented yet.

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Okay, I have 2 instances of Maraschino running now.

How do I get git to work from within my maraschino dir? I'm looking for a command like 'cd C:\foldername' as you would use in Dos.

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

This might help you. After you install git you will have to clone the repo again so it will not save your info unless you keep a copy of your maraschino.db.

You can follow the commands on the website or if using the experimental branch you should cd into the folder you want and do

git clone git://github.com/mrkipling/maraschino.git FOLDER_NAME_YOU_WANT_IT_IN
git checkout -b experimental remote/origin/experimental

After that you should edit settings.py and you should be done. Or just do the stuff for apache if you're using that

To get new updates after just run

git pull

And if you decide you want to go back to master

git checkout master
git pull

To start maraschino with python

python maraschino.py

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Thx man :) I'm fairly new with git so I need some time to look at this. Maybe I'll try tomorrow morning or else the next week.

If I don't speak to you again, I wish you and @mrkipling a happy new year! Keep up the good work ;)

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Couldn't resist to try the experimental branch today :P

The git clone is successful, However, when I type

git checkout -b experimental remote/origin/experimental

I get: fatal: Not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git

How do I resolve this?

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

You might be in the wrong folder. You have to be in the folder where you cloned maraschino into. I missed command in my explanation

git clone git://github.com/mrkipling/maraschino.git FOLDER_NAME_YOU_WANT_IT_IN
cd ./FOLDER_NAME_YOU_WANT_IT_IN
git checkout -b experimental origin/experimental

if it still doesnt work try to do git pull and then the checkout command

UPDATE: no 'remote/' needed in checkout command

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

Okay, I got it! Finally was able to reproduce on Windows XP and it is the easiest fix! hahaha Will push the fix now.

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

I have pushed the fix in both branches. Please test and let me know if it helped at all...

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Hah lol! Are you gonna tell me that the problem was only 2 slashes? xD That is a nice solution mate :P

I'm gonna try it right now!

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Hahah you won't believe it m8 :) It's working!! :P

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Oh and there's only one thing: The backgrounds are not viewed from the folder 'custom' but only from the main bg folder. So maybe you need to change a little bit more ;)

from maraschino.

N3MIS15 avatar N3MIS15 commented on May 29, 2024

confirmed working, damn those slashes.

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

Good to know guys. I had not seen that bit in the FAQ before. What I have been doing to have custom backgrounds is to just add them to the backgrounds folder and not backgrounds/custom. It has always been like that as far as I am aware but it would not hurt to have it the same as the FAQ, what dou you prefer?

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

I prefer to use the custom folder, because with every major release of Maraschino (so far), new bg's are added to the main backgrounds folder. If you use the custom folder, the user can add his own backgrounds to that folder without deleting the bg's he doesn't want.

Maybe you can create a setting in the web interface to let the user choose which folder he wants to use: either the default one or a custom folder with it's own images. If you do it this way, it would also be possible to create different custom folders with different image sets (different seasons, holidays, etc). The user can choose the folder he wants from within the interface.

from maraschino.

N3MIS15 avatar N3MIS15 commented on May 29, 2024

At the moment the FAQ does not reflect the code. I think the custom folder should be used and then ignored by git.

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

Fair enough I have raised the issue with mrk and I'll leave it to him to decide wether to use the custom folder or changing the FAQ. I will close this as the issue itself seems to be resolved.

from maraschino.

mrkipling avatar mrkipling commented on May 29, 2024

Originally there was 1 image (maybe a couple) in the main backgrounds folder, and the custom folder is in gitignore, so you could add your own backgrounds there without them being picked up by git. In Linux it was recursively looking in the backgrounds folder, i.e. background and custom were both being used, for me at least. Is this not the case any more?

from maraschino.

gugahoi avatar gugahoi commented on May 29, 2024

According to the feedback it doesn't seem to be working like that. No one has changed this part of the code as far as I am aware so I believe it has always been like this. If you just have a look at when this pull request was opened you can see it has been around for a little while.

In my opinion it makes more sense to use only bg's on the custom folder when enabled? Not very sure since I don't use this feature myself.

from maraschino.

mrkipling avatar mrkipling commented on May 29, 2024

I don't have a strong opinion, either works for me (as long as when the option is deselected it only ever shows the default background on page load, not a random one).

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

I agree with gugahoi, please show bg's only from the custom folder. Maybe you can add a little discription for that in the settings widget, before people go complaining that there are no backgrounds in this folder :)

from maraschino.

mrkipling avatar mrkipling commented on May 29, 2024

In Marcoevich's example this would mean that deselecting the option shows the default background, and selecting it would display a random background from the custom folder, provided that you have files in there (else fall back to the default, I guess). In which case we should probably delete all of the other images from the backgrounds folder?

This all sounds fine to me, by the way, like I said I don't really mind.

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

or you can fall back on the default backgrounds folder ;) You have some pretty nice images in there, it is a sin if you don't use them anymore

from maraschino.

mrkipling avatar mrkipling commented on May 29, 2024

That also works. Like I said, don't really mind, I don't use it :)

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

then you should make it happen :)

from maraschino.

N3MIS15 avatar N3MIS15 commented on May 29, 2024

i think /custom is the way to go. Only displaying the users custom images.

from maraschino.

Marcoevich avatar Marcoevich commented on May 29, 2024

Any news about this? At least the FAQ is still the same.. :)

from maraschino.

mrkipling avatar mrkipling commented on May 29, 2024

Haven't had a chance to look in to it - hopefully soon though. Will update this issue when I get round to it.
