Thanks for filing @KWierso . What would you say the timeline is for getting this work done, i.e., how much time do we have? It's not a user facing change so I want to understand the urgency.

I'm unsure of a timeline for removing the actual mercurial repository, or if it's even going to happen at all. @indygreg (:gps on IRC) might know? I don't know if I can tag him successfully if he's not in this Github organization.

I doubt we'll remove the mozilla-aurora repo because it has historical value. But it isn't being updated any more. So you should definitely transition to something else (like the beta or release repos).

Regarding polling hg.mozilla.org, that's not a huge problem as long as it isn't being done by tens of thousands of clients. Since this is a Python script and not part of the shipping product, I think we're OK? But, yeah, if you hit hg.mozilla.org from the shipping product, we'll likely ban access from user agents matching that product the second the load becomes problematic (which for popular products doesn't take long). https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Making_Network_Requests_From_Firefox should be mandatory reading for anyone implementing an HTTP request in a shipping product.

Looks like this script is only run during tests, and I am not even sure if we run these tests. Let me see if they are run during our buddybuild steps or with every PR.

But I don't think you are ever going to have a load problem as clients don't run this. Can I create a bugzilla for this and throw it in our backlog as a P3 / P4?
