I'd like to point out that this issue is limited to genes with an _[INT] variant. Changing the separator to _Separator_ should already fix some things, but adding a double underscore might fully fix it. Let's hope the ones that make up the gene names don't go that far to include double underscores.

Perhaps a completely different character (such as & or !) would be better instead of using double underscore.
According to https://www.rosaceae.org/nomenclature/gene, - (alleles), _ (splice variants) and . (before numeric gene suffix if symbol does contain a number) are the main ones we should worry about.
