As far as I understand from your example you are asking why modelmapper doesn't create a new Foo object for destination.

This seems like the default behaviour of the modelmapper. And it is not only that but if you try to map source object to any superclass of Foo then you'll have the same source object assigned to the destination variable.

If you want a new Foo object created for the destin variable with mapped values you can configure model mapper as such;

modelMapper.getConfiguration().setDeepCopyEnabled(true);
