Update: it looks like I might have been too hasty in my assumption that everything works when basic the mock on the Impl class. Even though the mock setup doesn't produce any error, the answer is not being returned but instead it looks like the original implementation is invoked instead. Just like an unmocked extension function. I get the impression that the compiler might have treated the type-parameterized method similar to an extension function.
