Unfortunately these are internal company emails that I can't send anywhere...
Using the file -i command to see the character set of the .eml files I can see that files that are "message/rfc822; charset=us-ascii" work but files that have either: "charset=iso-8859-1" or "charset=unknown-8bit" do produce this error.

Hmm... going to need more data than that. Is there non usascii characters in the headers?

Yes, in the subject I. I solved the issue by using Ionv and converting the raw emails to ascii before parsing them. Thanks.

Yes, incorrect encodings will nuke mail (and almost any other library).
I might make some error handling for this in a later release.
