You're correct that the insert_list function shouldn't work if the insert function doesn't work.

But... just because a test passes, that doesn't guarantee 100% that your function works. All it does is guarantee that it works on the particular inputs that the test used. The test cases randomly generate inputs, so it's possible to just get "lucky" and have the test pass only because of the particular values that were tested. My guess is that's what happened here for your insert_list function, and that if you rerun the test cases a couple of times, it would find a test case that would fail.

I ran the command python3 -m pytest 10 times on the lambda server and didn't get a insert_list function to fail. But the insert function failed every time.

Hmm... in the test cases it's possible to specify how "difficult" the random samples are, and the tradeoff is that more difficult random samples result in longer runtimes. It looks like you're getting lucky in the sense that the values I selected are too low to find a bug in your insert_list function.
